How to make your first $1000 as a writer on đť•Ź

929 word breakdown

10 months ago, I made $995 off of a Google Doc, a borrowed striped processor, and a heart of steel in 12 days.

Making money isn’t difficult.

Today, in the last letter of the sorry series, I’ll show you how to in a few steps.

Step 1: Figure out what people want

When you post online daily (as I shared how to days ago), you’ll attract many questions in your DMs and comments.

If you see a repeating question, pay attention.

That’s a potential business opportunity.

Invite the askers to a free call where you’d help them for free for their feedback.

On the call, ask them these 4 sets of questions:

  1. Technical questions: to help you understand their problem.

    - Tell me more

    - Why has that become an issue?

    - Could you give me some examples?

  2. Historical questions: to help you understand their past attempts.

    - How long have you had this issue?

    - Have you tried solving it before?

    - How did it go?

    - What do you suspect went wrong?

  3. Emotional question: to gauge how deep this problem is.

    - If I can erase this problem, how would it help?

    - On a scale of 1-10, how important is this for you right now?

    - Why so high/low?

  4. Financial questions: to see if they're willing and able to pay.

    - How much do you spend on your education per month?

    - How much are you comfortable paying if I created a program to help you solve this?

    - Why that amount?

After you’ve exhausted all the questions, help them for free as promised.

Once you get off at least 30 calls, I guarantee you’ll know exactly what people want.

Step 2: Build an offer

Based on Hormozi’s $100M Offers book, these 4 things make up an irresistible offer:

  • Dream outcome

  • Perceived likelihood of achievement

  • Time required to achieve results

  • Effort and sacrifice attached to succeeding

Increase the first two and decrease the bottom two.

You’ll get the dream outcome at the end of 30 calls.

Boost your credibility to improve your prospect’s perceived likelihood of achievement. (Do this by cleaning up your profile, publishing authoritative content, sharing your wins, and posting successful client testimonials.)

As you get better, the time to results and efforts and sacrifice attached reduces.

You’d also need 3 other elements to spice up the offer even more:

- Guarantees

- Scarcity/urgency/both

- Bonuses

In the end, your offer should look something like:

I help {target audience} get {dream outcome} in {time frame} without {effort/sacrifice} or {guarantee}.

Ex:

I help executives go from Dad bod to Chad bod in 14 days without gym equipment — or I work for free until they do.

I help writers with 1,000+ followers build a $10k/month business in 60 days without making them sell out. I only get paid after they get results.

Step 3: Build a product

3 options:

  • Do it yourself (DIY) - courses, templates

  • Done with you (DWY) - coaching, consulting

  • Done for you (DFY) - service work, freelancing

You can charge the most for a DFY and the least for a DIY.

If you’re a beginner, I recommend you start with a DFY or a DWY.

DIYs only make sense when you have a large traffic source and many testimonials — to prove that your advice is good enough for people to succeed without needing support.

So sign a client first and get a testimonial before getting customers.

Step 4: Build a landing page

You need somewhere to send traffic too.

And no, you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on a website.

You can build a website on Carrd for $19.

If that’s too pricey at this time, build a page for free on Notion.

Notion?

But Francis, won’t that make me look cheap?

It may. No, scratch that. It will, but it’ll work.

I made $995 off a damn google doc.

Trust me, Notion will do.

Step 5: A way to get paid

You need a payment processor.

  • Wise.

  • Selar.

  • Stripe.

  • Paypal

  • Paystack

  • Gumroad.

  • Or normal bank transfer.

Pick one and attach it to your landing page.

Step 6: Market your Product

Based on Alex Hormozi’s $100M leads, there are 4 ways to market anything on your own.

  • reach friends one-to-one (warm dm)

  • reach friends one-to-many (content)

  • reach strangers one-to-one (cold dm)

  • reach strangers one-to-many (ads)

If you’re a beginner, avoid ads.

Please don’t end up in debt and depression like I did.

Start with outreach, but don’t get comfortable. It’s a stressful (mental, emotional, and physical) medium for getting leads.

Content, however, is phenomenal. It’s the most fulfilling and leveraged option of them all.

So pick one or all and get eyes on your product.

There you have it.

Making money, like anything else, isn’t easy.

But poverty isn’t easy either.

If I could tell my younger, broker self one thing, it’ll be:

Just do it anyway.
